The History of the Mac Tools Company
Seven mencame together in 1938 with the idea and goal of making the finest mechanic tools in the world. They formed the company called Mechanics Tools and Forge Company and signed the Articles of Incorporation on July 11, 1938. At this time, the state of Ohio issued 250 shares of common stock as they officially recognized the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company. The seven men who formed the company could only afford to subscribe to 55 of the 250 shares.
Ralph McPherson and Otto Tucker were elected to become the first president and secretary of the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company. These two men did everything possible to gather $5,000 so they could buy a building and used machinery to begin production. The company began to prosper in 1942 when they received a large government contract to produce products to help during World War II.
In 1942, the Securities Commission helped the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company recapitalize. When they made their capital investment, Clem Poole approached the company with a proposal to open a socket division. Because of their recapitalization, they could not afford to open this division even though they knew it was needed. On October 30, 1944, the management team that included the same stockholders of the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company decided to open a new related company called the Clinton Tool Company. Clem Poole was the president of the new Clinton Tool Company and operated the company in the same building with the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company. Clinton Tool is recognized today for their professional line of sockets and accessories.
Russ Darah of whom had 20 years of experience in the tool industry, offered the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company the opportunity to purchase a competitor's line of tools. In 1945, through this acquisition, the Mac Allied Tool company was formed and located in Akron, Ohio to make shipping easier. The products produced by the Mechanics Tools and Forge Company, the Clinton Tool Company and the new Mac Allied Tool company became known as "Mac Tools". In 1963 the Mechanics Tool and Forge Company (combination of the two companies Mac Tools and Mac Allied Tool) changed its name to Mac Tools, Inc. In 1973, the ties between Mac Tools and the Mac Allied Tool company were split.
In 1980, Mac Tools was purchased by the Stanley Works company. This company is a major brand that includes, Stanley Tools, Proto, Facom Tools and Blackhawk tools. Today, Mac Tools is considered a leader in automotive tool and equipment production along with Snap-On and Matco Tools. They produce more than 42,000 different products and accessories in their line. This includes screwdrivers, ratchets, wrenches and assorted air tools. They also produce their own line of toolboxes at their plant that is located in Georgetown, Ohio.
Mac Tools still uses a mobile sales force of distributors for a direct sales approach. They are committed to a set of values that they use to drive the business. The values that Mac Tools defines, helps their employees to form lifetime relationships with their customers. The Mac Tool company operates today under the same philosophy that was used in 1938; to produce an excellent quality product that is reasonably priced while giving the best service possible.
